Charter granted by King John

The first royal charter granted by King John- Including the right to hold markets allowing Great Yarmouth to trade freely ans manage its own affairs.

1272

Magna Yarmouth

Yarmouth now called Magna Yarmouth, meaning GREAT, to clarify borders with ‘little’ Yarmouth- Now know as Southtown.

1340

New Crest from King Edward III

Due to the Naval victory at the Battle of Sluys- Great Yarmouth providing the majority of the merchant vessels- King Edward III gifted half of his crest to Great Yarmouth. 3 Silver Herrings now joined by 3 Royal Lions.

April 1801

Nelson

Nelson joined the fleet at Great Yarmouth and sailed to the Baltic- Winning the Battle of Copenhagen.

1814-1819 Nelson Monument was erected on South Denes.

1820

Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell was born in the house on Priory Plain.

Black Beauty was written in 1877 in Norwich.

June 1837

Victoria to the Throne

During Queen Victoria’s reign, we saw a shift in jewellery design. In the beginning, she embraced a variety of styles, including those gifted by Prince Albert- Diamond and Sapphires, ‘DEAREST’ rings and her serpent-shaped engagement ring. During her mourning periods, there was a lot of focus on jet, diamonds, and pearls. She also scowcased Scottish agates, influenced by her Balmoral Estate. 

1875

Cox and Son Founded

Established in 1875 by Frederick Henry Cox on the same site as we are today – opposite the historic St Nicholas’ Church in Great Yarmouth.

World Wars

WW1 saw Great Yarmouth suffer with air raids and bombardment of german ships.

WW2 saw the distruction of St Nicolas Church- Gutted by fire in 1942 bombing.

August 1985

Queen Elizabeth II

Great Yarmouth priviledged to welcome Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. First reigning monarch to visit the town since 1916.
